Traditional Performing Arts Shows 〈Cultural Exchange Hall〉

Two types of traditional performing arts are showcased on stage. They are an integral part of Ainu rituals and daily life. One is the Sinot, which expresses the transmission of culture through singing, dancing, and instrumental performances inherited in each region. The other is the Imeru, which expresses the restoration and regeneration of songs and dances that have been buried in history.

Archery Experience (Aksinot) 〈Archery Experience Hall (Workshop Annex)〉

Play a traditional Ainu game using a children’s bow and arrow set and experience Ainu hunting techniques and etiquette. Blunt arrows are used so anyone can play the game safely. The goal is to hit a shell representing prey, but this is more difficult than it looks, making the challenge all the more exciting.

Ohaw Tasting Experience〈Workshop〉*Requires prior reservation by email

You can sample Ohau, a traditional dish of the Ainu people. Ohau is a soup made by stewing local ingredients and has been said to be a central part of the Ainu diet. Let's experience the food culture of the Ainu tribe and hinna (meaning “to be thankful for food” in Ainu language) together.

Mukkuri Lesson〈Crafts Studio〉

Learn how to play the mukkuri (mouth harp), a traditional instrument of the Ainu people that is played by echoing the sound of small valves in the mouth. The sound of rain and wind, animal sounds, and one's own emotions are freely expressed. Tones change depending on the size of the space in the mouth and the way you inhale and blow. It is highly flexible and addictive.
